How to Choose a UPF Swim Cover-Up

On By ShopHDE / 0 comments

A swim cover-up has an easy job and a hard job. The easy job is looking good on the walk from the car to the sand. The hard job is being the thing you actually keep on for three hours because the sun is relentless and you would rather not reapply sunscreen to your shoulders every forty minutes.

Most cover-ups are only built for the easy job. Here is how to tell the difference, and what the UPF number on our cover-ups actually means.

What UPF measures

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It is a rating applied to fabric, not to skin, and it describes how much ultraviolet radiation the fabric lets through. It is the textile equivalent of SPF, but it covers UVA and UVB together.

Our kaftans, pareo wraps and cover-up dresses are rated UPF 30+. Our LRD performance shirts — a different fabric built for a different job — are rated UPF 50, which blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays. If you want the higher number, that is where it lives; see the Men's Activewear and Women's Activewear ranges.

Why weave matters more than colour

A loose, gauzy weave lets light through the gaps regardless of how dark it is. A tighter knit or a stretch fabric closes those gaps. This is the practical reason a sheer mesh cover-up cannot carry a UPF rating while a jersey kaftan can — and it is worth knowing when you compare a rated garment against an unrated one that looks similar in a photo.

The four cover-up shapes we make

1. The kaftan — most coverage, least effort

Our UPF 30+ Short Kaftan Cover Up and UPF 30+ Long Kaftan Cover Up are oversize dresses. You pull one on over a wet swimsuit without a fight, they cover the shoulders and upper arms, and they read as a dress once you are off the sand. Choose short for pool and boardwalk, long for a full day out.

2. The pareo wrap — most versatile

The UPF 30+ Pareo Swimsuit Cover Up Wrap ties as a skirt, a halter dress or a strapless dress. It packs to nothing and dries fast. It is the right pick if you want one item that changes shape through the day, and the wrong pick if you want zero fuss.

3. The hooded swim dress — the one you keep on

The Long Sleeve Swim Dress with Hood is our long-sleeve answer, and the hood is the part people underestimate — the back of the neck and the ears are where sunscreen gets forgotten. There is a plus size version on its own listing.

4. The reversible cover-up skirt — two looks, one packing cube

Our Reversible Cover Up Skirt range gives you a print on one side and a solid on the other. Best for a trip where you want variety without volume in the suitcase.

Choosing by how you will actually use it

Long beach days

Go long sleeve and hooded, or long kaftan. Sleeve length is the single biggest lever on how much skin the garment is covering over hours.

Pool and resort

Short kaftan or pareo. You are in and out of the water, and quick-drying and easy-on matters more than maximum coverage.

Boat and dock

Reflected light off water hits from angles your hat does not cover. A hood or a long sleeve earns its place here.

Travel

The pareo wrap and the reversible skirt pack smallest and give you the most outfit changes per gram.

Care, so the fabric keeps working

Rinse chlorine and salt out after wearing — both degrade elastic fibres over time, and it is the stretch fibre that keeps a knit's gaps closed. Skip fabric softener, which coats fibres. Dry out of direct sun where you can. Follow the care label on the individual garment.

FAQ

What UPF are ShopHDE swim cover-ups?

Our kaftans, pareo wraps and cover-up dresses in this range are rated UPF 30+. The rating is stated in the product title where it applies.

Do you make anything rated UPF 50?

Yes, but not in the cover-up range. Our LRD performance shirts — including the men's golf polos and long-sleeve fishing shirts — are UPF 50 and block 98% of UVA and UVB rays.

Is a cover-up a replacement for sunscreen?

No. A UPF-rated garment protects the skin it covers. Everything it does not cover — face, hands, feet, lower legs — still needs sunscreen.

Which cover-up covers the most skin?

The long-sleeve hooded swim dress, followed by the long kaftan. Sleeve length and a hood are what add real coverage over a long day.

Can I wear a cover-up over a wet swimsuit?

Yes — that is what the oversize kaftan and pareo shapes are designed for. They pull on without sticking.

Are cover-ups available in plus size?

Yes. Several are separate plus size listings; browse Plus Size Swimwear or the full Swim Cover Ups and Womens Swimsuits collections.
