A new print is the fun part of replacing a collar. The useful part is checking whether the old size still works. This September, the AKC's 2026 Responsible Dog Ownership Days directory offers a timely prompt to review everyday gear before local outings.
Start with a fresh neck measurement
- Use a soft tape around the part of the neck where the collar will sit. Write the measurement down in inches.
- Compare that measurement with this collar's chart, rather than choosing by breed or the size of an old collar.
- Adjust the collar on your dog. HDE's instructions call for space for two fingers between neck and collar; also check that it cannot slip over the head.
- Recheck the setting after an adjustment and as a growing dog's measurements change.
This approach follows the AKC's collar fitting guidance. A measurement gets you to a candidate size; the final fit check determines whether that choice works.
Neck range and strap width are different measurements
The adjustable range describes the neck size the product is listed to fit. Width describes the band itself. Moving from Medium to Large changes both, so a larger label is not just more adjustment room.

If the measurement falls between 18 and 20 inches: both listed ranges overlap. Compare the two widths and the adjusted fit instead of automatically sizing up. A 17-inch measurement falls within the listed Medium range; a 22-inch measurement falls within Large. These examples explain the chart, rather than guaranteeing a fit.
Some older product descriptions also mention XS and Small. Those sizes were not available in the featured product selectors when this guide was checked. Do not buy a Medium to substitute for a smaller neck measurement.

Does quick-release mean it is a breakaway collar?
The featured pages specify a quick-release plastic buckle. They do not specify an automatic breakaway mechanism. Do not select one on the assumption that it will release by itself when caught.
Will the color or print make it reflective?
These four listings do not specify reflective material. Choose them for their print and documented construction; a bright color is not a stated visibility rating.
Which measurement should I save for next time?
Record your dog's neck measurement, the selected collar size and its width. That is more useful for comparing future purchases than saving “Medium” alone. Check again before reordering.
