Dresses and Skorts With Real Pockets: Our Most-Asked Question

On By ShopHDE / 0 comments

If we had to name the single question that lands in our inbox more than any other, it would not be about fabric weight or shipping. It is this: "Does it have pockets?"

It is a fair question, because for years the honest answer from most of the apparel industry was no. So rather than treat pockets as a bonus feature we mention at the bottom of a bullet list, we build them into the product name. If a style has pockets, the words "with Pockets" are in the title. That is not a marketing flourish — it is how you search our catalog.

Why pockets get dropped from women's clothing

Pockets add pattern pieces, seams, and sewing time. On a soft knit or a lightweight woven, a badly engineered pocket also adds bulk exactly where nobody wants it. The cheap fix is to leave them out entirely, or to sew in a decorative flap with no bag behind it. The harder fix — the one worth doing — is to engineer a pocket that carries a phone without dragging the silhouette out of shape.

That is the trade-off we keep making in favor of the pocket. It is also why so many of our best-selling bottoms are pull-on styles: a pull-on waistband gives us room to hang a real, deep side pocket without fighting a zip fly for space.

Where the pockets actually are

Across our womenswear the pocket usually lands in one of three places:

  • Deep side seam pockets on dresses and rompers — the kind you can drop a phone into standing up.
  • Hidden pockets in the built-in short on skorts and romper dresses, so the outer skirt stays smooth.
  • Multi-pocket layouts on trousers, most visibly on our Yoga Dress Pants with 8 Pockets, which are offered in 28", 30" and 32" inseams so the hem lands where you need it.

Dresses with pockets

Our dress program leans heavily on styles you can wear for a full day without a bag. The Linen Mini Dress with Pockets and the Smocked Drop-Waist Midi Dress with Pockets both use side-seam pockets set into a relaxed skirt, which is the construction that hides a pocket best. If you want the look of a dress with the coverage of shorts underneath, the Flutter Sleeve Skirted Romper Dress pairs a quick-slip built-in short with pockets — and it is offered in a plus size version cut on its own block rather than graded up.

You can browse the full range in Dresses.

Skorts: the pocket problem solved twice

A skort has to do two jobs at once — look like a skirt, move like a short — and pockets are where most skorts fail. Put the pocket in the outer skirt and it flaps. Leave it out of the inner short and you have nowhere to put a scorecard or a ball marker.

Our approach is to put the working pocket in the built-in short. The LRD Women's Athletic Skort with Pockets is built for golf, tennis and running, and the Plus Size Athletic Skort with Bike Shorts & Pockets carries the same construction through the extended sizes. If you prefer a pleated look, the Plus Size Pleated Tennis Skort keeps the shorts underneath.

Shorts and pants, since the same question applies

The pocket rule runs through the rest of the line too — Cargo Shorts with Pockets, High-Waisted Linen Blend Shorts, 10" inseam Bermuda Shorts, and Linen Wide Leg Palazzo Pants. Browse Shorts for the short-length options.

How to find pocket styles fast

Search the words

Type pockets into the store search. Because we put the feature in the product title, the search results are the pocket styles — you are not relying on us to have tagged it correctly somewhere invisible.

Check the built-in short

On any skort or romper dress, read the title for "built-in shorts". That is where the pocket lives on those styles.

Read the inseam

Where we offer multiple inseams — 3", 5", 10", or 28"/30"/32" on the yoga dress pants — the inseam is in the product title so you can pick length without opening every variant.

FAQ

Do all ShopHDE dresses have pockets?

No. Only the styles with "with Pockets" in the product title have them. We put the feature in the name specifically so you never have to guess.

Are the pockets deep enough for a phone?

The side-seam pockets on our dresses, rompers and pull-on bottoms are designed to hold a phone. Pocket depth varies by style, so check the product page description for the specific item.

Where are the pockets on a skort?

In the built-in short underneath, not in the outer skirt layer. That keeps the skirt hanging cleanly while still giving you somewhere to put your phone, keys or a ball marker.

Do plus size styles get the same pockets?

Yes. Plus size is a separate product line for us, not a graded-up version of the straight-size garment, and pocket placement is set for that block. See our Plus Size collection.

Which style has the most pockets?

The Yoga Dress Pants, with eight.
